Art Therapy

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that utilizes the creative process to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being for individuals of all ages. The field of Art Therapy supports the belief that creative expression is in itself healing and that sometimes there are no words to communicate meaningful life experiences.

Art therapy combines the creative process with counselling models along with the use of art materials such as paper, chalk/oil pastels, paint, clay, photographs and magazine images. Through the experience of art-making clients learn to trust and express images and begin to see their concerns with a fresh perspective. Art therapy  encourages insight, intellectual understanding, and helps shift the emotional and physiological energy within the body that is oftentimes necessary  for change.

The art therapist balances session time for art-making and time to discuss the meaning of the images and forms created. This varies depending on the goals for therapy and the needs of each person and the professional approach of the art therapist. Art therapy  requires no previous experience.

“Images are like messengers of the psyche and soul that communicate, guide, transform and heal.”
